Circuit Breaker Testing: DV Power CAT Series Analyzers & RMO Series Micro-Ohmmeters
ProgUSA distributes the complete DV Power circuit breaker test line, the CAT Series analyzers and RMO Series micro-ohmmeters, with full U.S.-based support, training, and service. Circuit breakers are the protective backbone of every substation, and their ability to operate correctly directly affects grid reliability and personnel safety.
A breaker spends most of its life idle and must perform flawlessly the instant it is called upon. Regular timing, motion, and contact resistance testing is what confirms it will clear a fault when it matters.
CAT Series: Comprehensive Circuit Breaker Analyzers
The DV Power CAT Series provides full mechanical and electrical condition assessment of medium- and high-voltage circuit breakers. These portable, lightweight analyzers operate standalone or under PC control, and are designed for testing in accordance with IEC 62271-100 and IEEE C37.09.
A CAT instrument measures the timing of main contacts, pre-insertion resistor contacts, and auxiliary contacts. It also records coil currents, motion parameters, voltage, and main circuit resistance.
Through motion transducer channels, it captures contact wipe, over-travel, rebound, damping time, and average velocity, giving the full picture of how a breaker moves during operation. A CAT analyzer can also be equipped with an optional built-in micro-ohmmeter, adding main circuit resistance and dynamic resistance measurement (DRM), an effective method for assessing arcing contact condition.
The series scales to the application, from the handheld CAT Handheld Series with one break per phase up to the CAT 100, CAT 250, CAT 500, and CAT Advanced Series for breakers with up to four breaks per phase. This range lets utilities standardize on one diagnostic platform across field crews and test labs.
RMO Series: Dedicated Contact Resistance Measurement
Contact resistance is one of the most important and common tests performed during switchgear manufacturing, commissioning, and maintenance. The DV Power RMO Series micro-ohmmeters are purpose-built for this task.
They use Kelvin 4-point measurement principle for accurate readings on very low resistances, with results in accordance with IEEE C37.09 and IEC 62271-100.
The handheld RMO-H Series generates up to 300 A DC and is designed for contact resistance measurement of medium- and high-voltage circuit breakers, disconnecting switches, and similar non-inductive test objects. Its compact, field-ready form suits the access-constrained conditions crews encounter in live substations.
Applications and Standards
Together, the CAT and RMO series cover circuit breaker commissioning, routine maintenance, post-repair verification, and field troubleshooting across substation, transmission, and switchgear environments.
Both lines are engineered around the same international standards, IEC 62271-100 and IEEE C37.09, giving utilities defensible, repeatable test data for asset condition tracking and compliance documentation.
