DV Power CVA500: Current & Voltage Transformer Analyzer

Why Instrument Transformer Testing Matters

CTs and VTs translate high primary currents and voltages down to the low, standardized signals that meters and relays depend on. If a transformer drifts outside its accuracy class, metering revenue is affected and protection may fail to operate as designed.

Testing at commissioning and during routine maintenance confirms ratio, polarity, and accuracy before a transformer is placed in service, and tracks its condition over time.


CVA500 Capabilities

The CVA500 performs the full range of instrument transformer tests: turns ratio, saturation (knee point), burden, demagnetization, winding resistance, and insulation resistance. Polarity is verified during the turns ratio test from the measured phase shift, and the instrument calculates phase error as part of its accuracy class assessment. For the turns ratio test, the CVA500 can output up to 2 kV AC, helping deliver reliable, accurate results even on large CVTs. A VDC output supports insulation and winding resistance measurement.

Its one-time connection is a key field advantage. The CVA500 connects to all CT measurement terminals at once, including the primary side, up to five secondary taps, and burden. From that single connection, it then performs ratio, saturation, burden, and winding resistance tests across all five taps automatically, with no cable reconnection between taps.

For CTs, the instrument calculates ratio and phase errors across eight primary currents and four burdens, then automatically determines whether the CT falls within its specified accuracy class. Insulation resistance can be measured between any combination of primary, secondary, ground, and additional cores on multi-core units.


Applications and Standards

Utilities and service providers use the CVA500 for metering accuracy verification, protection CT assessment, and instrument transformer commissioning, along with routine maintenance and troubleshooting.

The instrument performs evaluations in accordance with IEEE C57.13 and IEC 61869-2, automatically calculating ratio error, phase error, and composite error, giving crews defensible, standards-based results for both revenue metering and protection applications.
