Montrel MEDCAP: In-Place Capacitor Bank Testing

ProgUSA has supplied electrical test and measurement equipment to utilities, NETA firms, and industrial users since 2005. Capacitor bank testing now joins that lineup, with the Montrel MEDCAP available in the U.S. through ProgUSA.

Capacitor banks support voltage and power factor across substations, and a single degraded unit can pull the bank out of balance. Verifying each unit's capacitance is routine maintenance, but the way it has traditionally been done is anything but quick.

The Problem

Conventional capacitor testing usually means taking the bank apart. Crews disconnect individual units and remove them from the rack to measure capacitance on the bench, then reinstall them.

That is time, disassembly, and interruption, and it is especially costly during the limited outage windows most substations can offer. The more units in the bank, the longer the crew is tied up and the more handling each unit absorbs.

The MEDCAP Answer

The MEDCAP verifies the capacitance of units in a capacitor bank without removing them from the rack, reducing test time. There is no disassembly and no removing units for bench testing.

It connects using a clamp-type CT and a 4-wire voltage connection, measuring each unit where it sits. The result is faster testing, far less handling, and measurements taken under real installed conditions rather than on a bench.

Results and Decisions

The MEDCAP delivers results in real time, viewable on its own handset display or remotely on a tablet or smartphone. Crews can monitor a test as it runs, generate graphs, and export the files that document the work.

That supports decisions on capacitor replacement, bank balancing and other substation studies, with measurements taken on the units as installed.

About Montrel

Montrel Tecnologia, based in Brazil, engineers capacitance and metering test instruments. The MEDCAP was developed under an ANEEL research and development program, project PD 06491-0403/2015, a partnership between Copel GT, Lactec, and Montrel.

The MEDCAP is available in the United States through ProgUSA, with domestic support behind it.

ProgUSA Support

ProgUSA backs the MEDCAP with hands-on U.S. support.

Equipment Selection

We help utilities fit the MEDCAP to their capacitor-bank program and test requirements.

Training

We provide training on measurement procedure, results management, and reporting.

U.S. Support

ProgUSA handles ordering, delivery and service coordination in the United States.

Demonstrations

On-site demonstrations let crews see the MEDCAP measure their own capacitor bank in place.
