Two Hipotronics instruments cover distinct but complementary parts of a substation maintenance program: the OC60-DI tests the dielectric strength of insulating liquids, and the 7BT60 verifies the integrity of vacuum interrupters. Together they give crews field-ready dielectric testing for both the oil and the vacuum-based apparatus in their fleet.
OC60-DI Liquid Dielectric Breakdown Tester
The OC60-DI tests the dielectric strength of insulating liquids used across a wide range of electrical apparatus. Insulating oil is the first line of defense in transformers and other oil-filled equipment, and as it ages or absorbs moisture its ability to withstand voltage drops, making regular breakdown testing a core part of oil-condition monitoring.
The OC60-DI tests up to 60 kV AC and supports ASTM D877, ASTM D1816, and IEC 60156, with test cells available for each standard. An internal digital kilovoltmeter automatically records the breakdown voltage of each sample, with automatic breakdown detection within 4 µs of the breakdown point and accuracy within ±2% of full scale.
Pre-programmed standards let crews run a compliant test in basic mode, while custom mode allows user-defined test parameters including target voltage, ramp rate, and dwell time. Results are handled through a 7-inch color touchscreen and saved to internal memory or transferred by USB. Battery operated and transportable at 60 pounds, it suits both field and laboratory use, for testing insulating liquids used in transformers, bushings, switchgear, and capacitors.
7BT60 Vacuum Bottle Tester
The 7BT60 is a 60 kV AC dielectric tester for the vacuum interrupters used in switchgear. A vacuum interrupter's ability to hold off voltage across its open contacts depends on the vacuum inside the bottle, and a loss of vacuum is not visible from the outside, so periodic dielectric testing is the practical way to confirm a bottle is still sound.
In operation, the 7BT60 raises voltage to a preset level, holds it for a set duration, then returns to zero. Features include automatic testing, a dwell timer, a memory kilovoltmeter, a failure indicator lamp, and adjustable output. It is a self-contained single-piece unit, 12 by 34 by 12 inches and 96 pounds, built for field use, with a removable high-voltage section for safer handling in transport.
