Automated Transformer Turns Ratio and Winding Resistance Tester

Introduction

ProgUSA distributes the DV Power TWR250B transformer tester with full U.S.-based support, training, and service. The TWR250B combines turns ratio measurement and winding resistance analysis in a single, fully automated instrument built for both field and factory applications.

For utilities managing critical transformer assets, this instrument addresses a common challenge: reducing test setup time while maintaining measurement accuracy. The TWR250B brings both capabilities together in one portable package.

About the TWR250B

DV Power developed the TWR250B as a three-phase test analyzer for fast, accurate, and fully automated power transformer testing.

The instrument enables single-step three-phase connection to all transformer windings, reducing setup time during on-site testing. Turns ratio testing reaches up to 250 V AC, while winding resistance testing delivers up to 25 A DC. Both functions produce precise and repeatable measurement results.

A 10.1-inch graphical touchscreen allows intuitive operation in the field. Automated tests, demagnetization, and vector group detection are performed directly from the display. The built-in battery ensures reliable testing even at locations without external power supply.

Key Capabilities

The TWR250B supports essential transformer diagnostic functions including turns ratio measurement per IEC 60076-1, winding resistance measurement, automatic tap changer position detection, excitation current measurement, phase angle measurement, and transformer vector group detection. A built-in demagnetization function prepares transformers for accurate testing. The TWR250B includes a built-in thermal printer. Field crews can print test results directly from the instrument immediately after testing or retrieve any previously saved result for on-site documentation. No laptop required.

Applications

Utilities and service providers use the TWR250B for power transformer commissioning, routine maintenance testing, post-repair verification, tap changer functionality assessment, factory acceptance testing, and field troubleshooting.

Utility Benefits

Modern transformer test equipment improves maintenance efficiency in several ways.

Reduced Testing Time

Automated three-phase testing minimizes setup and measurement duration. During limited outage windows, faster testing means more work completed per maintenance cycle.

Improved Accuracy

Eliminating manual connection changes reduces human error. Consistent, repeatable measurements provide reliable baseline data for asset condition tracking.

Simplified Operations

Intuitive touchscreen interfaces reduce training requirements. Field crews can perform consistent testing procedures without extensive preparation.

Better Asset Decisions

Accurate turns ratio and winding resistance data support repair versus replacement decisions. Trending results over time helps identify developing issues before they become failures.
