Product Spotlight: UViRCO CoroCAM 8HD
Combined UV Corona, Thermal, and Visible Camera
ProgUSA distributes the UViRCO CoroCAM 8HD combined inspection camera with full U.S.-based support, training, and service. The CoroCAM 8HD integrates three imaging systems into a single handheld instrument: a solar blind UV corona camera, a FLIR radiometric thermal camera, and an HD visible camera.
For utilities running high-voltage inspection programs, the CoroCAM 8HD addresses a persistent challenge: detecting both corona discharges and thermal anomalies in a single pass, without switching between instruments.
About the CoroCAM 8HD
UViRCO Technologies developed the CoroCAM 8HD for professional high-voltage infrastructure inspectors. The instrument is designed for inspecting equipment operating at 3.3 kV and above, including transmission lines, substations, and switchgear.
Three Integrated Cameras
The solar blind UV channel detects corona discharges and arcing using advanced UVc imaging with adjustable sensitivity controls, including long integration mode, noise reduction, and threshold adjustment. The UV detector has no degradation over its lifespan.
The FLIR LWIR thermal channel provides radiometric data through a 640 x 512 pixel detector with a temperature range of -40°C to 160°C. The 10.4° x 8.3° field of view is suited for overhead infrastructure inspections.
The HD visible channel delivers 1920 x 1080 resolution with 30x optical zoom, capturing detailed images of physical component condition for maintenance priority assessment.
All three channels operate simultaneously with synchronized zoom. Co-location of electrical discharges and thermal hotspots on a single display gives inspectors direct insight into the cause and severity of a fault.
Key Features
The CoroCAM 8HD is built for field use. It weighs 2.5 kg with battery, operates for up to 3 hours on a replaceable Li-ion battery, and supports external 9-16V DC power.
A 5.7-inch rotating LCD display and ventilated viewfinder support comfortable operation in varying conditions. One-handed operation through a rotatable grip with integrated controls reduces fatigue during extended inspections.
Onboard recording stores still images, video, and radiometric data to a Micro SD card. UCF files capture uncompressed images from all three channels along with camera settings and calibration values. The included CoroBASE reporting software supports analysis and documentation. Internal GPS tags all inspection data with location coordinates.
Utility Applications
Utilities and service providers use the CoroCAM 8HD for substation inspections, transmission line surveys, switchgear condition assessment, and high-voltage equipment commissioning. The combined UV and thermal capability supports inspection programs following the EPRI methodology for maintenance priority assignment.
Detecting corona activity and thermal anomalies in a single pass eliminates the need for multiple site visits with separate instruments.
