Wavecontrol EMF Measurement: SMP3 Field Meter & WaveMon LF-400

ProgUSA has supplied electrical test and measurement equipment to utilities, NETA firms, and industrial users since 2005.

Electric power work puts crews near strong power-frequency electric and magnetic fields, and confirming that exposure stays within accepted limits is a basic part of a utility safety program. Wavecontrol instruments let crews both survey a site and monitor individual workers in real time.

Why EMF Measurement Matters

Substations, transmission and distribution lines, and transformers all produce electric and magnetic fields at power frequency. Workers who spend time close to energized equipment can be exposed to field levels that need to be assessed against occupational limits.

Measuring those fields is what turns exposure from an assumption into a documented, defensible number, supporting both worker safety and compliance with occupational exposure standards.

SMP3 Field Meter

The SMP3 is a portable, three-in-one EMF field meter that combines broadband measurement, FFT-based spectrum analysis, and static field measurement in a single instrument. For occupational surveys it applies the Weighted Peak Method, comparing the measured field against the selected limit in real time and displaying the result as a percentage, so a technician sees compliance status directly in the field.

A single SMP3 works with Wavecontrol's full range of interchangeable probes for both electric and magnetic fields. The probes are isotropic and auto-detecting: the meter recognizes the connected probe automatically, with no manual configuration. For utility work, low-frequency magnetic and electric field probes such as the WP400 (1 Hz to 400 kHz) cover power-frequency surveys near lines, substations, and transformers. Wavecontrol calibrates in its own ENAC-accredited laboratory under ISO 17025, with the accreditation covering E and H field probes.

WaveMon LF-400 Personal Monitor

Where the SMP3 surveys a site, the WaveMon LF-400 protects the individual. It is a wearable low-frequency personal monitor that continuously measures the magnetic field around the worker and warns them in real time, through combined LED, audible, and vibration alarms, when levels approach the selected limit.

Worn on the body, it gives crews working near energized equipment immediate feedback without stopping to take a reading. For workers with active implanted medical devices, the LF-400 also supports lower exposure thresholds; see our AIMD article for that specific risk-assessment case.

Applications and Standards

Utilities and service providers use Wavecontrol instruments for worker exposure surveys and personal monitoring near power lines, substations, and transformers, across routine assessments, commissioning, and compliance documentation. The instruments assess exposure against applicable limits and standards, including ICNIRP, IEEE, and FCC, with the relevant limits embedded in the meter.
